Each month, we put on workshops for young people, mentors and workers in the health and social care industry. This month we we have been bringing workshops focusing on equipping young people with vital competencies such as confidence building, recognising passions, life skills and employability skills.
Through these interactive sessions, we push our young attendees beyond their comfort zones, encouraging them to share experiences and develop new skills in a supportive environment. Here is what you may have missed this month, with helpful links.
Cheshire Youth Commission workshop
The workshop was delivered by Becca, and one of our young people involved with the Cheshire Youth Commission gave a powerful presentation on identifying healthy and unhealthy relationships thus empowering other young people. Her confidence and progress had a profound impact on the other young people, demonstrating how far she has come.
The workshop on sexual harassment was a valuable and engaging experience for all the young people who attended. They found the session extremely helpful and informative, gaining a deep understanding of the different forms of sexual harassment—verbal, visual, and physical—and the legal consequences. The workshop also addressed how young people experience various forms of sexual harassment, where it can occur, and highlighted key policing issues related to this topic.
A significant focus was on the growing concerns of sexual harassment in the context of social media, exploring how online platforms can exacerbate these issues and affect young people. They also learned about the long-term implications if someone reports them for sexual harassment, including potential legal and personal consequences. They created mind maps to discuss ways to encourage reporting, enhance support from police and organisations, and increase accountability among peers. Overall, the workshop had a significant impact, leaving everyone with practical knowledge and tools to address and prevent sexual harassment, both in person and online.
Sex, Lies and Love Workshop
The “Sex, Lies and Love Workshop” provided a comprehensive exploration of critical issues including pornography, relationships, and exploitation. Libby shared insights from her experiences working with young people in care in Paraguay, setting the tone for a safe and supportive environment.
The workshop began with ice-breaker activities designed to foster a relaxed atmosphere, then shifted focus to social media. Young people engaged in a mind-mapping activity that examined both the positive aspects (such as maintaining connections, learning opportunities, and meeting new people) and the negatives (including bullying, exposure to harmful content, and risks of exploitation).
Key topics included the risks of exploitation, and the tactics used by exploiters, the impact of pornography and violent content on relationships and desensitisation, and the importance of consent. Discussions also covered the legalities and risks associated with sharing explicit images and sex under the influence. Young people learned about safe practices and the challenges of reporting abuse.
The workshop included interactive elements such as a consent game and a discussion on harassment, addressing the normalisation of certain behaviours and the influence of social media. Overall, the workshop emphasised the importance of respecting personal boundaries, seeking support, and understanding the impact of online behaviour, leaving young people with valuable insights and practical knowledge.
Developing resilience and knowledge is the cornerstone of these workshops. Participants will learn strategies for building inner strength, coping with adversity, and bouncing back from setbacks. Through interactive activities and discussions, they will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of certain topics and achieve personal growth.
Participants will be provided with information on various support avenues available to them, including counseling services, helplines, and community resources. By fostering a culture of open communication and support, the facilitators will empower the young people to take proactive steps towards their well-being and personal development.
